Lotte Trading has been the exclusive distributor of Japan's MUJI brand since July 2003.
MUJI originally started as the brand business department of Japan's top retailer Seiyu in 1980. Seiyu forecasted that the era of overabundance from mass production and over-consumption spree would soon draw to an end, and a more mature consumption pattern of balancing the price and quality would take place among Japanese consumers.
Accordingly, the brand MUJI was launched with its full lineup of quality products with reasonable prices. It was a mega hit from the very beginning and brought about a dramatic change throughout the entire Japanese market. MUJI recorded an explosive growth and made a spin-off in 1989 under the company name of Mujirushi Ryohin, meaning "no brand, good product". Today its sales reach 110.7 billion yen, and it currently has 3,133 employees at 268 stores in countries such as Britain (16), France (4), Hong Kong (3), Singapore (2) and Ireland (1).
MUJI's core business sectors span from fashion to accessories and foods. Its fashion items are known for its signature lines that are simple and straightforward. In fact, MUJI places paramount importance on highlighting natural beauty and usefulness across all its business sectors, and makes sure to exclude any artificial, obtrusive feel in creating its products. Such design aesthetics in combination with its corporate philosophy helped it quickly emerge as a worldwide brand offering unique shopping experience.
